When Chris Hannah, music teacher at Mennies Elementary school in Vineland NJ, saw a posting for a deaf dog on his local SPCA website, he knew it was meant to be. Hannah’s nephew Kevin is also deaf, so he expected they would be friends right away.
However, Cole’s relationship expanded much past his nephew. Hannah says that Cole also has an amazing relationship with his students, and gives inspiration to kids who feel a bit different. After brainstorming in a few of his classes, Hannah’s students came up with the idea of creating a comic book about Kevin and Cole: Captain Cochlear and Maestro Mutt! Comic book in hand, the trio travels from school to school promoting acceptance and awareness and teaching kids that “just because you have a disability doesn’t mean you can’t do anything you want to do”.
