Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous prison in the world, but there was other living creatures behind the walls besides the inmates.  Animals were an important part of Eastern State’s history, helping with the operation of the prison and as pets for inmates that were kept in solitary confinement.  Some of the animals include horses who worked pumping water, to pigs that would eat kitchen scraps, to Pep, the most famous dog inmate.

If you are interested in learning more about the pets in prison,  check out ESP’s Family weekend August 17th and 18th.  Not only can you explore the grounds but PA’s prison dog training program, New Leash On Life USA, will  be on site to show off their pups!

Make sure you tune into Eye Opener Monday Through Friday from 6-8AM.
