Miss Philadelphia 2013, Francesca Ruscio, wears her crown proudly, but you might be surprised that her story doesn’t fit the mold of a typical pageant queen.  Francesca opened up to me about how two years ago her life dramatically changed when she was diagnosed with Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome also known as PCOS.

PCOS affects one out of ten women in the U.S. When I sat down with Francesca she said her battle with PCOS all started in college when she gained 35 pounds, suffered from acne, and even lost her hair.  She describes this disease as robbing women of their femininity.  Francesca says her hormones out of balance and she was even told it would be difficult if not impossible to bear children.

Francesca says she has not been alone in dealing with the disease. She thanks her mother, a nutritionist, for changing her diet to be gluten free, low glycemic, and vegetarian, which is helping her hormones stabilize.  Francesca also works out religiously.

She showed me one of her specialty smoothies made of kale, spinach, green apple, and a banana! It was a delicious and healthy treat!

Francesca proves to women that beauty comes from the inside and out!
