For the last seven months the St. John Neumann shrine in Northern Liberties has been getting refurbished.

“I really think the Saint John Neumann shrine is going to be an attractive place during the World Meeting of Families,” said Dan Jost, owner of DJ Architecture. LLC.

The fresh look includes a new atrium, a St. John Neumann enter and a remodeled shrine. The reaction so far from visitors has been positive.

“Before anyone knew that Pope Francis was coming here a few years ago these plans were already in place. Its basically to give the shrine a fresh look and make it attractive to the pilgrims that come here to pray,” Jost said.

Father Raymond Collins, director of the St. John Neumann shrine is ready for potentially thousands of pilgrims to visit during the World Meeting of Families.

“We have about 20 groups already signed up to actually come and visit but then there will be others like any convention group well lets go see what’s it going to be like. We are prepared for that. We have many volunteers lined up at all different parts of our site here,” Father Raymond Collins said.

The shrine could potentially welcome Pope Francis for a visit, similar to Pope John Paul II visit in 1979.

“A visit from Pope Francis to this shrine certainly will be a moment of grace. I believe everyone here would be touched by his visit. My own sense if he does come it will probably be simply to pray at the tomb of Saint john Neumann,” Father Raymond Collins said.
