PHILADELPHIA -- Twenty percent of perfectly edible food is thrown out in the United States. Hungry Harvest is a company working to end that statistic, and it's now officially delivering in Philadelphia.
CEO Evan Lutz founded Hungry Harvest in 2014 out of his dorm room at the University of Maryland. After receiving $100,000 from Robert Herjavec on Shark Tank in 2015, the compnay spread it's roots to Virginia and D.C., including an official launch in Philadelphia at the beginning of November.
Hungry Harvest's mission is simple, purchase food that supermarkets don't want, as well as surplus produce from farmers, and deliver it to customers at a reduced price. In addition, for every box delivered to a customer, the company then donates a box to Philabundance.
"We don't want to just have good food," says Cynthia Plotch, Philadelphia City Manager. "We want to have impactful food and meaningful food."
Currently the company has nine drivers who hand deliver the produce to 450 customers. Kevin Brown, Hungry Harvest's delivery team manager, says the healthy impact was part of his reason for joining.
"I'm a fitness trainer and wellness coach." says Brown. "I've spent many years trying to help people eat better and educate them on better dietary principles. There's a food desert in many places in the city where people don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables so the fact that that food is being made available to those people is huge to me."
Produce packages range from $15 -$35 for a mixed harvest of fruits and vegetables. Organic options and add-ons are also available.
According to Hungry Harvest's website, customers also save each week compared to supermarket prices.
Since it's launch, the company has rescued one million pounds of food.
