MANAYUNK, PA - A Philadelphia police sergeant is in stable condition  after a hit-and-run accident in Manayunk early Thursday morning.

Police officials say an officer was investigating a traffic stop on the 4100 block of Main Street near Shurs Lane just before 1:00 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Witnesses saw a 2008 Toyota Rav-4 traveling southbound on Main Street, which struck the officer, sending him 15 feet in the air.

The driver of the Rav-4 fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later after a quick-thinking witness followed the fleeing motorist.

The driver of the Rav-4 was stopped on the 400 block of Conarroe Street in Roxborough and taken into custody.

Authorities say he displayed signs of being under the influence.

The police officer is recovering at Einstein Hospital and sustained injuries to his neck, shoulder, elbow and knee.
