Our focus is literacy rates that, according to experts at non-profit Achieve Now, show that 40 percent of students in Philadelphia schools are not reading at grade level. Jennifer’s guests include Lissa Hilsee, President of Achieve Now, which through its curriculum, supports principals and teachers in moving students to grade-level reading or above. Teacher Rita Roberts from the General George G. Meade School in North Philadelphia talks about the effectiveness and implementation of the program along with one of her third grade students, Nekiyah Walkers - who shares how she’s made great strides in reading. “In Focus” is broadcast Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to Noon on PHL17.
