One of the area’s first LGBT-friendly affordable senior apartment complexes is opening in the heart of Philadelphia’s Gayborhood, and PHL-17’s Zachery Lashway meets one of the new tenants. The John C. Anderson Apartments at 249 South 13th Street “…shows you how the city embraces us, provides for us, and makes us feel secure and part of the community,” says new resident Roosevelt Adams.

The property is a $19.5 million structure with six stories made up of 56 one bedroom units. But for the residents, it’s all about the many tailored amenities. Councilman at large James Kinney notes gayborhoods were initially culturally significant because they acted as safe havens. Nowadays they’re so much more, he says.

Take a look to learn more about this unique facility that’s helping to secure and diversify the LGBT community in Center City.

And be sure to tune into Eye Opener, a different kind of morning show, weekdays from 6-8 a.m. only on PHL-17.
