Stuffing ‘n’ Stacking Doughnuts at Reading Terminal Market Benefit

Reading Terminal Market is full of great vendors, but perhaps one of the most beloved is Beiler’s, the Amish bakery that lines the left-most corner of the building with sweet-smelling treats. I joined Beiler’s Hand-Rolled Doughnuts and some of Philadelphia’s biggest personalities Feb. 22 for the fourth-annual Party for the Market benefit, supporting preservation of the Market and performing arts and nutrition education for Philly-area students. The highlight of the event, which also featured live entertainment, black tie attire and dancing, was the Celebrity Stuff ‘n’ Stack competition, which pitted three eager teams of local celebs against each other to see who could fill and stack the most Beiler’s doughnuts in under two minutes.

Councilman Mark Squilla and I battled to the last bignet, filling nearly 50 pastries with Beiler’s stuffing machines before stacking them into a tower. *Technically* the highest tower of doughnuts denoted the winning team, but we were all winners. And so were the attendees, who got to enjoy our hard work and the mouth-watering doughnuts. Congrats to my media colleague at Channel 3 Jim Donovan on his swift victory (I’ll get you next time Jim!).
