Kyle Bryant was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a rare neurological disorder that impacts coordination, balance and speaking, when he was just 17 years old. Now 32, Bryant is about to embark on the fifth year of Ride Ataxia, the biking event he founded to raise money towards finding a cure for the disease. It all started in 2007 when Kyle and his dad biked 3,500 miles from San Diego to Memphis, where they attended a meeting for the National Ataxia Foundation. The event has come a long way since then, now launching from six start points around the country in California, Illinois, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas.

Bryant is a seasoned athlete, having completed the 3,000-mile Race Across America with his four-man team in just eight days, eight hours and 14 minutes. He competes in a three-wheel bicycle with a bucket seat and the pedals up front, which alleviates the need for him to worry about balance. Bryant’s initial goal for Ride Ataxia was to raise a modest $30,000, but his rides have grossed a combined $2.5 million. Ride Ataxia is now the marquis fundraising event for Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance.

WPHL-17 is a proud media partner of Ride Ataxia. Tune into Eye Opener all week for more compelling stories of people impacted by Friedreich’s Ataxia. The local chapter of the biking event will take place at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania the morning of October 13. Visit to learn more.
