Once upon a time, 40 Santas took to the Philadelphia Streets for a run and a city tradition was born.  The Philadelphia Running of the Santas has grown exponentially, from those humble beginnings a few short years ago.  In the 2013 Philly Running of the Santas, over 5,000 costumed runners ran from Finnigan’s Wake to The Electric Factory.  While the majority of the runners are traditional red suited Santas, the event has grown in both popularity and scope; elves, reindeer, gingerbread men, Heat Miser, Snow Miser, snowmen and women, and really any Christmas related character you can think of were on hand Saturday.  Check out the Running of the Santas 2103 photos from Philadelphia below.

Live bands, great drink specials, a Hottest Santa Contest, and a short “RUN” (three blocks) is what makes the Running of the Santas something special.  But it’s more than beers and bars– several local charities benefit from the event.

It’s a smart idea to prepare, train, and eat properly before going on a run wether its in the mud, At the gym or in a large event such as the Philadelphia Marathon… but how do the folks who take on the Running of the Santas prepare for this annual December dash down Spring Garden Street?

Wonder why thousands of people dressed as Santa ran and wondered the streets of Philadelphia yesterday? Well, we asked them and this is what the said. Running of the Santas 2013

The crowd of spirited Mr. and Mrs Clauses erupted into Eagles cheers minutes before the start of the annual Running of the Santas in Philadelphia.

Santa Claus is coming to town, and this time it’s not by sleigh—he’s running!  The 16th annual, ‘Running of the Santas’ will be taking place this Saturday in downtown Philadelphia where more than 10,000 costumed revelers are excited to turn out for the festive charity event.

With one of Philadelphia’s largest outdoor seasonal events right around the corner, I was visited live on set by Mr. Clause known as Ryan Van Laeys and his lovely reindeer, Julie Dorenbos who told me all about the huge holiday charity event!  Ryan Van Laeys tells me, Running of the Santas began as a pub crawl with a few pals who were feeling festive, and through the years, it quickly turned into a country wide charity event!

Running of the Santas Philly

Philadelphia Magazine calls Running of the Santas Philadelphia, “A younger, hotter version of the Mummers Parade.”  While we here at PHL17 find the Mummers Parade incredibly hot…  Running of the Santas 2012 was indeed a jolly good kick off to the holiday party season.

The Running of the Santas is at its core a “pub crawl” and is part of a national series. The “run” begins in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia at Finnegans Wake and ends at The Electric Factory (aka The North Pole).  Over 6000 people dressed as Santa run, walk, skip, or crawl the five blocks from one bar to the other.

The run benefits the Ellie Koerner Leukemia Fund and the FOP Lodge #5 Survivors Fund.  Event promoter Ryan Van Laey hosted the event and pointed out that the Philadelphia run was the biggest and most “enthusiastic” of any other in the country. Shocker.
