Former Olympian Summer Sanders Wants You to Rethink Varicose Veins

Former U.S. Olympic Gold medalist Summer Sanders might not be what many people would see as the face of a medical condition, but great health and all Sanders is raising awareness for varicose veins. Summer shared her inspiring story with me at the office of Dr. Charles Dietzek in South Jersey. She’s encouraging more people to pay attention to their bodies.

Summer says her medals 20 years ago represented victory, but today they hold even more meaning.

“With every passing year my olympic medals mean a little bit more to me, and I think that’s because I appreciate everyday a bit more,” Sanders said.

Summer’s life after swimming revolves around being a mother, a wife and the face of varicose veins through the Rethink Varicose Veins Program. Summer says her mother and grandmother had varicose veins. Summer says the pain she experienced in her legs from varicose vein was a precursor to a disease called chronic venous insufficiency or CVI. Doctors say often this condition is hereditary.

Vascular Surgeon Charles Dietzek says more people should pay attention to what could be symptoms of venous disease.

“Tiredness, aching, heaviness, they may experience even burning, itching and as things become more advanced discoloration of the skin,” Dietzek said.

He adds medicine has come a long way and if you’re treating a venous disease often times insurance will cover the procedure. This is different from cosmetic procedures involving spider veins.

Summer says when she underwent her procedure it was non-invasive and only lasted about 45 minutes.

“I was talking with my doctor the entire time. It was one of those moments you see on TV where he says OK tell me if you feel anything and then the next second we were done,” Sanders said.

Get It Right, Get It Tight With JL Fitness!

If Rocky could “get it right, get it tight” in Philadelphia, then you can, too! I headed out to the Philadelphia Art Museum with personal trainer Jayel Lewis, who owns JL Fitness. She says there are many ways people can use Philadelphia’s rich architecture for a great workout.

JL Fitness is an international company, which started in Germany. Jayel recently brought her personal training program to the States. She says it’s important to work one-on-one with clients so she caters to everyone’s specific needs.

We did a full circuit workout around the Philadelphia Art Museum. We started with getting in plank position and working our cores. Then we ran up the art museum steps and did a series of lunges and squats. We continued with some ab work and then finished with my hardest challenge: burbees. Once we finished I could really feel a great burn in my body.

You can get in shape with JL Fitness at the 12th Street Gym starting in July.

Father’s Day from the Kimmel Center

I was lucky enough to celebrate the wonderful tradition of Father’s Day with my own dad at the Lincoln Center Orchestra for Jazz with Wynton Marsalis. This event was presented by the Kimmel Center for the performing arts and took place on Saturday, June 15th at 8pm!

PHL17 and Eye Opener celebrated Father’s Day in a variety of ways this week. We invited Home Depot to visit our set live on Monday to provide some clever suggestions for Father’s Day gifts this year! We featured a Grill Giveaway all weeklong to be presented to the winner of our “Ugliest Grill Contest”. On Friday morning, we were treated with a live visit from Del Frisco’s who cooked up some tasty steaks and lobster mac and cheese!
