To commemorate “Armed Forces Day” the Philadelphia Flyers and the Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ hosted a very special ice sled hockey exhibition this weekend. The USA Warriors took on the USA Women’s Sled Hockey Team in games on May 17th and 18th.  The “Wounded Warriors” motto is “none tougher” and the team is comprised of service men and women that have been injured in service to our country.  The Warriors are based out of Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. The USA Women’s Sled Hockey Team is the team that competes in the Winter Paralympic Games.  Also joining in with the Warriors  were members of Southern New Jersey’s own sled hockey team, Virtua Hospital’s Wings of Steel. Check out some photos of the very hard competitive action below.

The sport of sled hockey is played very similarly to ice hockey, however athletes unable to skate in a standing position sit in special sleds and propel themselves around the ice using specialized hockey sticks. If you have never been to a game, you’d be shocked at how fast some of the players are able to propel themselves in the sleds using only the specialized sticks.  Puck-handling is another aspect of the sport that is fun to watch as highly skilled players move the puck side to side around and through the sled.
Three games were played between the USA Warriors and the Women’s National teams over the course of the weekend and this event occurs annually.  You can find out more about the teams on Facebook to see what’s next.( USA Warriors , USA Women’s Sled Hockey and Virtua Hospital’s Wings of Steel.
