Once upon a time, 40 Santas took to the Philadelphia Streets for a run and a city tradition was born. The Philadelphia Running of the Santas has grown exponentially, from those humble beginnings a few short years ago. In the 2013 Philly Running of the Santas, over 5,000 costumed runners ran from Finnigan’s Wake to The Electric Factory. While the majority of the runners are traditional red suited Santas, the event has grown in both popularity and scope; elves, reindeer, gingerbread men, Heat Miser, Snow Miser, snowmen and women, and really any Christmas related character you can think of were on hand Saturday. Live bands, great drink specials, a Hottest Santa Contest, and a short “RUN” (three blocks) is what makes the Running of the Santas something special. But it’s more than beers and bars– several local charities benefit from the event.
